MALICIOUZ
Biography
Born and raised in Montreal, MALICIOUZ is a visual artist of Haitian heritage. Her artistic approach is characterized by the spiritual posture of her subjects, mainly Black women, whom she presents as monumental entities in her paintings and murals.
Starting in 2005-2006, she gained recognition in the hip-hop community for her artwork and customization on clothing, particularly using airbrush. In parallel, she began graffiti in 2007, a practice that later led her toward mural art.
In 2011, painting marked a significant turning point in her artistic journey, becoming the core of her work and leading her to exhibit regularly. Some of her notable solo exhibitions include Matriarch (2018), Black Army (2023), and Retrospective at the Afromusée (2021). Her painting Rage of a Pure Soul is currently on display at the Musée de la Civilisation in Quebec as part of the exhibition Word is Bond. The Sound of Rap Queb. Her murals can be found in cities such as Montreal, New York, Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, Abidjan, and Douala.
MALICIOUZ’s paintings and murals are collected internationally and are part of public collections such as Patrimoine Canadien, the Michaëlle Jean Foundation, and the City of Sorel-Tracy. In 2021, she published the book MALICIOUZ Art Afro Urbain Contemporain (MALICIOUZ Contemporary Afro Urban Art), a ten-year retrospective of her artistic career, featuring nearly 200 works, including her paintings and murals. The artist also occasionally speaks at conferences, where she shares her vision of art and culture in various contexts and with diverse audiences and institutions.
